WCA Quarterly Newsletter (September 2024)

Dear Wildlife Conservation Community,

We are thrilled to share our latest updates for the third quarter of 2024! Thanks to your unwavering support, we have made significant strides in our mission to protect our environment and wildlife. Here’s a summary of our recent activities:

Program Highlights for Q3 2024

Nature-Based Wastewater Solutions for Nosara:

  • Our ambitious project to implement nature-based wastewater solutions has successfully launched in recent months. After placing the signage and training the staff, we are currently in the early stages of analysis and optimization of the systems! Here are the key installations:

    • Multi-family Residence in Hollywood, Nosara: Serving 18 residents and 5 households from the Nosara Food Bank.

    • Howlers Restaurant & Bar: The first restaurant in Nosara to utilize a biogarden system for wastewater treatment, benefiting the environment and enhancing sustainability efforts.

    • Santa Marta School: Aiding 215 students and staff while kicking off an educational program for children.

Biodiversity Program:

  • Our camera trap network continues to thrive. We've observed exciting wildlife, including new sightings of ocelots and the always fascinating jaguarundi. In the last quarter, we communicated the timely donation of a $5,000 grant received from the WCS Rotary Club, which allows us to implement more cameras and repair those needing maintenance to get them operational again. We are already working on this!

Marinelife Program

  • As we await the largest arribadas of the year, we are actively collaborating with Pelagos to ensure the buoy’s repair for monitoring oceanographic parameters, such as wind, waves, and temperature. We are committed to preserving our marine ecosystem and making steady progress on this initiative.

  • We have also recently trained 5 individuals for marine turtle monitoring. In collaboration with NCA and SINAC, we are working to ensure that the newly formed Natural Resources Vigilance Committee (COVIRENA) is equipped to carry out the monitoring. Additionally, we will be working on the restoration and painting of the beach markers to facilitate their task

Water Quality Program:

We have continued our weekly monitoring at the four original points of the program (the mouth of the Nosara River, Playa Pelada, Bakers Beach, and La Palmera in Guiones).

However, we face two challenges: the need for funding to include Playa Garza permanently in the program, and the lack of a volunteer to collect and transport samples every Wednesday from Ostional to Guiones.

This would enable us to cover the entire coastline between Ostional and Garza!

With a goal of $2,000 per year for testing Playa Garza, we invite you to collaborate with local businesses or friends to make this possible! And if you're the volunteer from Ostional, we would love to speak with you!
