WCA Quarterly Newsletter (July 2024)

Dear Wildlife Conservation Community,

We are excited to share our latest update for the second quarter of 2024! Your steadfast support has enabled us to make remarkable progress in our mission. Here’s a summary of our recent activities:

Program Highlights for Q2 2024

Water Quality Program

  • Monitoring: To date this year, we have conducted 31 weeks of rigorous testing, analyzing over 240 samples from five locations for Fecal Coliform and Enterococcus. This quarter, we added Ostional to our list of funded locations and are seeking additional funds to include Garza.

  • Nature-Based Wastewater Solutions for Nosara: One of our most ambitious projects this year has taken shape. We have installed three bio-gardens in the community to naturally treat wastewater from families, students, and patrons.

Key installations include a multifamily residence in Nosara housing 18 people, Santa Marta School benefiting over 200 students and teachers, and Howlers in Playa Guiones, accommodating up to 40 seats. We will monitor their effectiveness throughout the year for potential expansion.

This project is funded by Grand Challenges Canada, in partnership with Ridge to Reefs and Suwo Constructora.

Biodiversity Program:

  • Camera Traps: We maintained 17 camera trap stations and conducted 79 deployments. Our cameras continue to capture fascinating wildlife, including new sightings of ocelots at the MINAE station, and the recurring but always impressive Jaguarundi, Northern Tamandua, coatis, and foxes.

Marinelife Program

  • Turtle Monitoring: Four dedicated volunteers conducted 51 turtle surveys from January 2024 to date, documenting threats to sea turtles, including 280 dogs, 247 vehicles, and 16 bonfires as of the end of July 2024.

Education Community Workshops:

From late April to July, we have conducted several educational activities within the community that bring us closer to our mission each day. Here are some details:

Water Quality: We hosted a group from Nosara Playhouse School who, as part of their science class, visited our lab to learn about water quality and the sample analysis process.

Sustainable Nosara: We were invited to the David Kitson Library for one of their speaker events, where we discussed our Sustainable Nosara platform and how we can enhance our environmental commitment.

Biodiversity: Thanks to our ongoing work with Harmony Projects, we carried out an activity with their employees to learn about our biodiversity and camera trap monitoring program.

Marine Program: As part of our partnerships program, the Kimball Electronics team attended a workshop on sea turtles, marine life, and ecosystem preservation.

In this quarter, during the activities mentioned above, we had the honor of hosting over 121 people.
